You don’t need a gym full of equipment to give your legs a tough workout. This six-move bodyweight routine packs plenty of work into a very small space.
Calisthenics coach Nedim Sofic shared the “Jailhouse Complex” on Instagram, using a descending-rep format known as the Downs Method. Sofic runs the Golden Era Calisthenics account and regularly shares bodyweight training ideas.
How the routine is structured
The workout begins with 10 reps of six exercises performed one after another. In the next round, you drop to nine reps of each, then eight, continuing all the way down to one.
Finish every round and you’ll complete 55 reps of each movement, or 330 reps in total. There are no weights or machines involved, so all you really need is enough floor space to move comfortably.

The routine includes skater squats, squat jumps, sissy squats, Cossack squats, wall hip thrusts and single-leg calf raises. Several are performed one leg at a time, which adds an extra challenge before the descending sets start to pile up.
AdvertisementSkater squats focus on single-leg strength and balance, while squat jumps add a more explosive element. Sissy squats place more emphasis on the quads, and Cossack squats introduce side-to-side movement while testing mobility.
From there, wall hip thrusts shift more of the work towards the glutes. Single-leg calf raises finish the routine, with each rep involving a controlled lift and lower of the heel. A wall can be used for balance if needed.
The descending format also changes how the workout feels as it goes on. The highest-rep rounds come first, then each circuit becomes slightly shorter as fatigue starts to build.
Despite the “Jailhouse” name, the routine itself is fairly simple. It is essentially a high-volume leg workout built around bodyweight exercises, making it easy to try at home when space and equipment are limited.
