Volvo is reportedly building a bigger, cheaper EV

Volvo may be preparing a new electric SUV that is larger than the current EX40 but considerably cheaper when it reaches the United States. The proposed model is expected to be called the EX50 and could arrive in the US in autumn 2027 (via Motor1). However, Volvo has not officially announced the vehicle or confirmed any launch plans.

The EX50 could replace the EX40 as Volvo’s entry-level electric model in the US. It is reportedly longer and taller than the outgoing SUV, potentially providing more room for passengers and luggage. Those larger dimensions may also position it closer to family EVs such as the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Pricing could be one of its biggest selling points. The EX50 is expected to start in the high-$40,000 range, considerably below the 2026 EX40’s starting price of $56,545, including destination charges.

The SUV is also tipped to use Volvo’s SPA3 electric architecture, which debuted with the larger EX60. The platform features an 800-volt electrical system and is designed to improve efficiency and charging speeds while reducing manufacturing costs. Battery capacity, range and charging figures have not yet been reported.

The EX50 could be built at Volvo’s new factory in Košice, Slovakia, from autumn 2027. The company is reportedly targeting as many as 10,000 US sales during the model’s first year, though that figure has not been confirmed.

There is at least one sign that the name may be genuine. Volvo has filed to protect the EX50 trademark in Europe, though manufacturers often register names without eventually using them on production cars.

For now, the EX50 is still only a reported future model, as Volvo has yet to reveal it officially. Its larger size and expected lower price sound promising, but the company still needs to confirm the vehicle and whether it will replace the EX40.
