British brand Walero made its reputation designing FIA-approved base layers for professional racing drivers. Now they’ve reworked the same approach for runners, gym-goers, hiker and bikers – indeed for anyone on the move.

Walero’s technology is built around Outlast, a NASA–derived material that actively regulates your body’s core temperature and skin’s microclimate. Conventional wicking technology manages moisture by reacting to your sweat and pulling it away from the skin. Outlast proactively manages heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. That’s the great leap forward.

Walero

At the core of Walero Active are micro-encapsulated phase change materials known as Thermocules. These are incorporated into the fibres and fabrics and have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. That means the garments maintain the body’s comfort zone as effort levels rise and fall or when the weather changes unexpectedly.

If this all sounds like technological gobbledygook and you’re thinking spacesuits rather than sports ware, then the garments look surprisingly conventional. Available in Cool Grey and Mediterranea, they’re named after iconic peaks like Snowdon, Ben Nevis, and Helvellyn. And they are also very stylish. I tried the top and the bottoms and was impressed by what I wore.

Ben Nevis Long Sleeve Half Zip Top

Ben Nevis Top

Attractive in  turquoise with orange stitching and black stripes on the back, the Walero Active Half Zip is built for movement and comfort. The ultra-soft, antimicrobial fabric and advanced Outlast tech keeps the temperature just right.

Flatlock seams and ergonomic thumb holes ensure all day comfort, while a recycled YKK zip and soft chin guard ensure closure at your neck. Wear it as a layer or on its own, and there’s even a tiny chest pocket for your keys.

Helvellyn Men’s Leggings

Helvellyn Leggings

For those chilly mornings .the Walero Active Men’s Leggings deliver targeted warmth and performance. The Outlast tech regulates body temperature and the ultra-soft, antimicrobial fabric fights odour and reduces washing.

Flatlock seams and a flexible waistband ensure a secure, chafe-free fit, while the outer thigh pocket holds your phone, wallet or keys on the go. They seem refreshingly bulky, enough to keep you warm, but not too hot when the sun starts shining.

VERDICT: A game changer for active tops and bottoms, they don’t come cheap but you’re going to keep your cool and stay cosy.
