An estate agent star of The Apprentice TV show has slammed Rightmove as “bloody expensive”, and called on fellow agents to boycott the portal.
Kieran McCartney, who hit the headlines for the way he left the hit programme, told The Neg in an exclusive interview that agents “need to be strong” and stand up to Rightmove.
He exited the programme after promising Lord Sugar he would walk if he failed to win the following task, becoming the first ‘apprentice candidate’ to leave in that dramatic fashion.
CriticsNow, McCartney, who owns his own property firm McCartney & Partners, has joined the chorus of critics attacking Rightmove for hiking its fees and charging estate agents higher amounts each year.
“Unless Rightmove pull their socks up and pull their prices down, they are not going to have my business,” he says.
He accuses the portal of being “bloody expensive”, and believes agents can bypass them if they make the most of the opportunities presented by social media.
Daylight robberyRecently, it was revealed agents could be set for a massive £1.5 billion payout if legal action filed against Rightmove proves successful. The claim alleges that it has abused its position as the dominant property portal.
And last year independent estate agent Shaun Adams set up a petition, accusing Rightmove of “bullying” and “daylight robbery” over its fees.
Young managerMcCartney is in the process of selling his agency business and deciding what he wants to do next. He is considering whether to continue a career as an estate agent or set himself up as a ‘property expert’.
In the short term, he has been approached to run a portfolio for another business, including a 2,500-unit development. Previously he worked for Rubicon and Sequence UK, becoming a branch manager at just 21.
