We’ve finally reached the light at the end of the winter tunnel. The days are longer and the sun is shining, and all is right with the world. No? Still not in full-on summer mode yet? Well, that’s ok — May is a mere month away, bringing with it the unofficial start of summer at Memorial Day. It also brings music festivals, food and wine festivals, and beach parties. Plus Cinco de Mayo and the general relief that we don’t have to think about winter again until football is back. So if you’re dreaming of a last-minute getaway, here are our picks for the best places to go in May and where to stay.

Louisville, Kentucky

Why go in May: Louisville turns into a citywide party around the Kentucky Derby, with weeks of festivals, events, and peak spring weather.

You don’t need to know a thoroughbred from a loaf of bread to have the weekend of your life at the Kentucky Derby. The first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown runs on the first Saturday in May, drawing over 150,000 people to Churchill Downs for what’s as much a fashion show and party as it is a race. That mean nothing to you? Cool. There’s still an insane party in the infield at Churchill Downs that’s like a better-dressed spring break. And you’ve probably got a decent shot at winning money by betting on the prettiest horse.

Louisville has plenty to do even if you can’t get into the Derby. The city’s food scene has been in the national spotlight for years — Top Chef filmed a season here, and the restaurants that put it on the map are still very much worth seeking out. You can also spend the day in the Wonka Land of Whiskey at the Evan Williams Experience. Or visit one of these other fantastic distilleries not on the Bourbon Trail.

Where to stay: For Derby week, booking early is essential, especially if you’re traveling with a group. In NuLu, this converted 175-year-old church Airbnb offers a stay that feels tied to the city’s history, with four private suites, original architectural details, and a location within walking distance of restaurants like Garage Bar, Galaxie, and Feast, as well as stops along the urban bourbon trail like Angel’s Envy and Rabbit Hole. For something more on-theme, there’s a two-bedroom rental centered entirely around bourbon culture, with barrel-built walls sourced from Kentucky distilleries, leather seating, a full set of cocktail tools and glassware, and a backyard with a grill and fire pit for evenings in. If you want a little distance from the crowds, this riverfront home about 10 minutes from downtown sits directly on the water along River Road, with a large deck, open living areas, and enough separation to make it feel removed from Derby chaos while still being close enough to get in and out of the city easily.

British Columbia, Canada

Why go in May: You can ski, bike, and hit wine country in the same trip, with shoulder-season pricing and fewer summer crowds.

From skiing and biking to wine and swine, May is hands down the best month of the year to visit beautiful British Columbia. Up in Whistler, there’s often still enough snow on the mountains to hit the slopes that hosted the 2010 Olympics, while lower elevations have already shifted into spring. After a morning on the mountain, you can swap skis for a bike and spend the afternoon riding in Whistler Mountain Bike Park as trails begin to open for the season. Then fuel up for it all again during spring dining events, when restaurants across Whistler offer special prix-fixe menus.

If you’d rather consume calories than burn them, BC’s wine country has you covered. Head to the Okanagan Valley in May for the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival, which typically features dozens of events, tastings, and vineyard experiences set among some of the most underrated wine scenery in North America. You’ll also find smaller food-focused events across the region this time of year, where local chefs pair seasonal menus with wines from nearby producers.

Where to stay: In Whistler, location and access matter. Just outside the village on Blueberry Hill, this four-story chalet sleeps six and delivers excellent views of Whistler and Blackcomb from every level, with multiple living spaces, a media room, and a billiards area for evenings after being out on the mountain. In May, you’ll have direct access to hiking and biking trails right from the property as the snow recedes. If you want to stay in the center of everything, there’s a two-bedroom condo at the base of the mountains that puts you within steps of the lifts, with a balcony facing the slopes and an open-plan layout that works best for families. For something more compact with added amenities, there’s also this one-bedroom unit in a ski-in, ski-out complex overlooking the Lower Merlins run, with access to a large pool and multiple hot tubs.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Why go in May: You get hot, dry beach weather with fewer crowds and better prices right after spring break season ends.

The last straggling college kids have abandoned Cabo, replaced by travelers who know May is one of the best times of year to be here. The spring break crowds are gone, and the city hasn’t yet reached hurricane season, which means warm days, clear skies, and far fewer people on the beaches.

Even if you can stand on a surfboard for about as long as you can ride a bull, the beaches will be less crowded, and the sunny weather will be ideal. Just don’t come expecting whale watching — the season runs from December through April, and by May the whales have moved on.

As the Cabo-Wabo crowd has thinned, the city gets a little more sophisticated too. Weekly art walks continue in nearby San José del Cabo, and local markets and restaurants feel more relaxed without peak-season traffic. It’s still Cabo — you can go as hard as you want — but May gives you more room to decide.

Where to stay: On Médano Beach, this four-bedroom villa puts you directly on Cabo’s main swimmable stretch of sand, with a private pool and hot tub facing Land’s End and access to a private beach club, which makes it one of the most practical options if you plan to spend most of your time in the water. Up in Pedregal, this eight-bedroom hillside villa spreads across multiple levels, each opening onto patios with dining areas, sun loungers, and shaded outdoor spaces, plus a gym, sauna, and full staff, which works well for large groups who want everything handled on-site. Also in Pedregal, this four-bedroom home sits in a gated community above the Pacific with open ocean views, a private pool and hot tub, and a quieter setting away from downtown, while still being a short drive to the marina and nightlife.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Why go in May: Beach festival season kicks off on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, with warm weather and events right on the sand.

The clear white sands of the Gulf Shores aren’t just the best spot for spring break in Alabama. They’re also the best place to experience beach parties all summer, which kick off at the Hangout Music Festival, a beachfront music festival held each May in Gulf Shores. The festival is right on the ocean, so you can watch acts from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The crowd is one of the most diverse of any festival, and being all ages, it won’t make anyone who’s graduated college feel old.

That’s a good thing because the parties outside the festival are as much a draw as Hangout itself. The acts don’t start until early afternoon, which means you’ll have plenty of time to roll down from your beachfront condo and play beer pong on the beach before heading in. After the music stops, those condo towers come alive with parties that can last until sunrise. But as long as you’ve got blackout shades, you won’t need to worry about waking up.

Where to stay: There’s this two-bedroom beach house set in a quieter part of Gulf Shores with water views and an oversized front patio where you can sit outside and hear the waves, which works well if you want a house without being in the middle of the busiest stretch. For something smaller, this one-bedroom condo overloosks Little Lagoon, with a balcony facing the water and a layout that suits a couple or a short stay. If you’re traveling with a larger group, have a look at this eight-bedroom gulf-front home steps from the beach, with a private pool and a large deck facing the water, plus close access to nearby bars, restaurants, and shops so you don’t need to go far once you’re there.

Memphis, Tennessee

Why go in May: The city’s biggest annual celebration, Memphis in May, brings live music, barbecue, and events across the riverfront all month.

If you’ve heard rumblings about Memphis making a comeback, there’s no better month to get out and see it than May, when downtown hosts the massive Memphis in May festival. The event — which used to be limited to one weekend — now lets you get a little piece of Memphis’s best all month, kicking off with the Beale Street Music Festival, traditionally held the first weekend of May.

You can also opt to visit later in the month, when barbecue smoke fills the city during the annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Over 250 teams from around the world descend on the bluffs above the Mississippi River, grilling up savory meats that can literally be smelled for miles. You won’t be able to sample it unless you’re on a team, but the excitement it brings to downtown makes it one of the best times of the year to be in Memphis.

Where to stay: Check out this newly built three-bedroom home near downtown with floor-to-ceiling windows, an open living and kitchen area, and a private courtyard, placing you within a short distance of Beale Street, the Civil Rights Museum, and the city’s main venues. Right nearby, there’s also a larger four-bedroom historic house in Victorian Village with a second-floor patio and quick access to attractions like Big River Crossing and the Rock ’n’ Soul Museum, which works well if you want more space while staying close to the center. If you’d rather base yourself outside the busiest areas, there’s this six-bedroom home in East Memphis with a private pool, waterfall feature, and a full kitchen, set in a quieter neighborhood with parks nearby and a short rideshare into downtown.

Cayman Islands

Why go in May: Carnival season peaks with Batabano, plus you get warm, clear water before summer travel ramps up.

Yes, Carnival is still going on in the Caribbean this time of year — especially if you’re in Grand Cayman. Batabano is the Cayman Islands’ national carnival, with its main parade typically held in early May along Seven Mile Beach, where costumed “jumpers” take over the streets with music, dancing, and all-day celebrations.

You’ll find flowing rum punch, elaborate costumes, and more soca music than you’ve heard in your life during days when locals take a break from reality.

But it’s not all parades and pandemonium. You’ll also find food events and street festivals around George Town during this time of year, along with organized boat days where people head out on the water to recover in the sun.

You can still hit up Stingray City while you’re there too, the absolute closest and safest experience you’ll ever have with a stingray the size of a giant pizza — one of the Cayman Islands’ most popular attractions year-round.

Where to stay: It would be smart to base yourself on Grand Cayman and island hop to the others. That way you’ll be close to all major amenities. I’d highly recommend avoiding resorts, yes, you get a flop and drop vacation, but having your own home will give you a more authentic experience. For a couple or small family, this cottage is dreamy. Sleeping up to four, it has a resort-style pool, a garden shower, outdoor dining, a heated spa, and there’s a complimentary Land Rover Defender shuttle service that will take you to nearby beaches. If you need more space, consider this family-friendly three bedroom home in George Town. The two-story house has a beautiful terrace overlooking a private beach. Or if you have a flexible budget, this modern beachview retreat is in Northside. It comes with added extras like watersports gear and is managed by a professional hospitality company.

Santa Barbara, California

Why go in May: Wine festival season kicks off with ideal coastal weather before peak summer crowds arrive.

Santa Barbara could be on this list every month, a town that embodies all of the perfect weather of Southern California with all the Pacific charm of the Central Coast. But in May you’ll have the best chance to experience Santa Barbara wine country when the Santa Barbara Vintners Festival takes place each spring. Here the very people who make SoCal’s best wines take to the pouring stations and explain their creations with all the expert knowledge and passion their blends deserve. Far better than most festivals, where at best you’ll talk to a brand manager.

The festival is held in the Santa Maria Valley, culminating with a grand tasting of dozens of wines, many poured for the first time. It’ll also include samples from local restaurants, wine demos, and lessons on how all the stuff you drank got made.

Where to stay: For something special bookmark this early-1900s Montecito beach house set directly on Miramar Beach, with white-painted exposed beams, a brick fireplace, two decks, and an outdoor shower, plus quick access to Coast Village Road and the shops and restaurants of Montecito. For something with a different feel, there’s this redwood beach house surrounded by greenery and strung with lights, with three ensuite bedrooms, a recently updated kitchen, and a jetted hot tub for evenings after a day out along the coast. Just south in Summerland, there’s also this oceanfront home set right above the water, with a large deck, floor-to-ceiling windows, built-in seating, and direct views over the Pacific, along with a full kitchen and beach gear for time spent down on the sand.
