By Gabe WhisnantShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Senate voted Friday to keep most of the federal government funded through the end of September after President Donald Trump struck a deal with Democrats to temporarily separate Homeland Security funding and allow debate on new limits on federal immigration raids.
The agreement came as a potential weekend shutdown loomed and followed the deaths of two protesters in Minnesota during encounters with federal agents. Under the deal, Homeland Security would be funded at current levels for two weeks while lawmakers consider Democratic demands for greater oversight and accountability of immigration enforcement.
The measure passed the Senate 71-29 and now heads to the House, where a brief partial shutdown remains possible until lawmakers return.
